How do I check my tax code, or how much tax I have paid overall?

The best place to check for an overall picture is directly on the HMRC website, via the Government Gateway facility.

If you move between multiple jobs throughout the year or have multiple income streams, it can be difficult to track your tax code and overall earnings (especially if your tax code is non-cumulative).

HMRC hold information on tax paid for anyone using the PAYE system, and the Government Gateway tax account lets you easily track this.

This service tends to be quicker than calling HMRC, and has information on your PAYE tax, YTD earnings, and NI paid. The portal will also show if any additional tax is due based on your deductions so far this year, and current tax code.

1) Setting Up an Account

If you don't have a gateway login already, you can easily set one up here: https://www.access.service.gov.uk/login/signin/creds.

Once you have entered your preferred login details, you'll be issued with a GatewayID. Please ensure you keep this safe, as you may need this to access your account later on.

  • This will ask you to register 2FA, to keep your account secure.
  • It will also ask you to verify your identity via your passport OR driving licence, and payslips OR credit history.
  • You can also choose how you are notified about any changes - by post or online only.

2) Accessing your information

Once you have logged in, all information available to you is accessible via the home screen.

If you'd like to check on your tax, you can select the "Pay As You Earn (PAYE)" option. This will show your current tax paid, and current tax code.

You will also see options here to download and view historic data, and also to monitor updates from HMRC on changes to your tax profile.
