Guidance on what you will and will not be asked to provide when completing a check via TrustID for Nasa Group
We have created this article in response to a recent situation where a worker has used a QR scanning app to complete an ID check, which unfortunately redirected them to a third party website prompting for payment details. We have written this in the hopes of reducing the chances of this happening for anyone else.
A TrustID check is completed for all new starters with Nasa Group to ensure ID and Right to Work compliance. TrustID is an IDVT checking service, which we must use to verify our employee's right to work, in line with Home Office guidance. The check is sent to each new starter in the form of a link to click via email, directly from Nasa. This check must always be completed on a mobile device.
- If you open the link from your mobile device, it will take you straight to the check and you can get started.
- If you open the link from a desktop or laptop, it will provide you with a QR code to scan on your mobile device and get started from there.
As QR codes become more popular, we must always err on the side of caution for potential scams, impersonation or phishing attempts. It can be hard to tell when a QR code could be diverting you away from the intended web source.
Many newer models of smart phone will have a QR code scanner built into the camera app, so you can simply open the camera and use it as a QR scanner. It should also allow you to see the URL of the website it is redirecting you to before clicking and proceeding to the link.
Many people choose to use a QR code scanning app instead, either out of preference or because their phone does not have these built in features. Unfortunately there are many QR code scanning apps available to download that will place adverts and buttons over the screen, as well as possibly redirecting you to an advert or different website instead of the original webpage. This could potentially take you to a page that prompts for payment details in order to 'access' the page, or 'proceed' with something - which is not legitimate.
TrustID will never ask you to confirm any bank details or payment card information.
If you scan a QR code to start a check and are diverted to a page asking you to input payment details, please close that page straight away. If you have entered any details, please report this to your bank immediately.
Unfortunately this situation recently occurred with of our workers. We have created this article in the hopes of reducing it happening to anyone else.
We reached out to TrustID directly for their say on this:
Please be advised that uploading documents via the TrustID link does not require the candidates to enter their credit card details.
This issue is due to the external/third party QR code reader app that the candidate is using. As there are pop-up ads when using their QR code reader app which is asking for them to enter their credit card details.
We would recommend for them to click the “ Click here to get started” in blue print on the Guest link that you have sent using their mobile device or copy the link by pressing and holding the “click here to get started” and paste it on a Chrome browser using their mobile device.
